Grassroots Community Training, Focus on Conflict-Affected Communities
Based on our experience, we have developed a training curriculum for grassroots leaders. This includes topics such as social analysis and innovation at the community-level; human rights and basic legal aid information. Selected participants represent a fair mix of gender, ethnicity, and multi-religious backgrounds to explore the impact of conflict on their communities. The training process helps identify community learning needs are and formulate a strategic plan to meeting these needs.
This is a participatory effort where AJAR, together with existing networks, invites ordinary people, community members to write their story or other people’s stories of violence and oppression, as well survival and struggle. This stories, testimonies, or artistic expressions are collected so that future generations can learn the lessons of the past.
Accountability in Transition
During periods of change, there is an opportunity to address the root causes of conflict, and press for more accountability, as a part of strengthening peace. AJAR works with these communities to identify what areas need more transparancy (financial management/ corruption, discriminative practice in employment, or human rights violations) and develops a long-term strategy to try to address them together.
Support for Schools in Vulnerable Communities
One area of emphasis will be on providing long-term capacity building for remote local schools in conflict areas. This will be done by providing on-going teacher training, as well as providing equipment, developing curriculum, and other resources as needed, to develop peace education program for school children. AJAR has plans to run a “summer” program for selected school children from these conflict areas, as a way to increase learning opportunities for them.
